Pre-Prep trip to Kew Gardens - Friday 7th March

On Friday 7th March the whole of the Pre Prep went on a visit to Kew Gardens. The weather could not have been better, allowing for pleasurable walks around the gardens looking at the huge variety of trees, flowers and shrubs. The girls thoroughly enjoyed visiting the greenhouse and looking at the different plants growing there. Years 1+2 had a super talk learning about where different foods come from and the different parts of a plant. Little Bramley and Reception enjoyed looking at all the wonderful colours in the garden and making their own postcard using parts of plants and flowers of different colours that they found on the floor.

Year 5 Maths Trip - Tuesday 4th March

On Tuesday 4th March Uppers went on ‘A Mathmagical Adventure’ to Epsom College. During dramatic presentations we met Katie who didn’t like Maths homework. In fact she wasn’t keen on numbers at all and rather carelessly lost them. In trying to get them back she was faced with many adventures, all of them involving mathematical problem solving of some sort and all of them requiring the assistance of the most excellent Year 5 mathmagicians present. The day consisted of the material written by Mrs Thompson for a maths week at Bramley 3 years ago and was being trialled as a maths day for a number of prep schools. It was lots of fun, as well as being challenging, and proved to be a great success with all present.

Trip to Tutankhamun Exhibition - Thursday 28th February

On 28th February all the girls from Years 3 to 6 visited the Tutankhamun Exhibition at the 02 Centre in London

accompanied by Mrs Blake, Mrs Hamilton, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Sichangwa, Miss Lucey, Mrs Bawden and Mrs Shead. The girls were fascinated by the many treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Once again, we were delighted to receive various

compliments from members of the public regarding the

excellent behaviour of the girls.

Instrumental Concerts

Congratulations to all the girls who performed so beautifully on Monday evening. Instruments included violins, clarinets, flutes, guitars, piano, recorders, ocarinas and voices. The Junior Choir (Year 2) sang ‘If I could talk to the animals’ and the Senior Choir ‘Memory’ and ‘Coconut Man’. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A further £65 was raised for Okunggedi School, Uganda. Thank you for your support.

Gymnastics

The 2008 House Gymnastics competition was very successful and all girls performed beautifully with partner balances, floor routines or vaults. Russet came 3rd with 86.5 points, Crispin 2nd with 93 points and, with only one point in it, Pippin were the overall winners with 94 points.

Cycling Proficiency Success - Monday 18th to Friday 22nd February

Full speed ahead for confident Bramley School girls who recently completed the Surrey County Council’s scheme to teach all children age 10-11 basic skills for cycling on the road. Qualified instructors from the scheme taught the girls the correct way to cycle, emphasising the importance of observation, hand signals and correct positioning of the rider when on the road. The course is run each year at Bramley with the girls taking to the real road for a test at the end of the five day course.

Ballet and Tap Show at Riddell Hall

Reception to Tops performed the ballet ‘The Magical Garden’, which included rabbits, butterflies, frogs, bumblebees, flowers and fairies. In the tap section Juniors to Tops presented a selection of Disney numbers. Well done to everyone who performed beautifully and worked so hard in the rehearsals.

Fundraising for Okunggedi School in Uganda

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our Ugandan day a big success. The girls all looked wonderful dressed in the colours of the Ugandan flag and they thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Ugandan lunch’ prepared by George.

We raised a fantastic total of £312.65, for which our friends at Okunggedi will be

extremely grateful.

Netball Tops Vs Mums

Tops played a very entertaining match against their mums on Tuesday

evening. Whilst the mums took a while to get into the swing of things, their performance was creditable and the final score for the A team was a 2-2 draw and for the B team 4-0 to the parents. I can’t help thinking that the mums used their height to their best advantage! Well done Tops for being such good sports!

Little Bramley and Reception trip to Polka Theatre - Friday 1st February

On Friday 1 February Little Bramley and Reception had a thoroughly enjoyable trip to the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon to see a creative adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s ‘Princess and the Pea’. The performance challenged the girls’ imagination as the story was told by one actor with an enchanting array of puppets and props.

Town Mouse and Country Mouse visit Pre-Prep

The Pre-Prep were enthralled by the Pied Piper Company’s performance of this delightful tale. The two actors combined singing, guitar, mouth organ and accordion playing to help bring this simple story to life. In the process the girls were reminded of the valuable lesson that even, though we are all different and we don’t always understand each other, we should be respectful and loving just the same.

African Revival - Thursday 24th January

On 24 January, African Revival came to Bramley to talk about Uganda and Okungeddi school, who we are twinned with. They told us about the role of the United Nations in peace keeping, improving human rights and in making people’s lives better. We learned about the first four Millennium Development Goals which are: to stop hunger; to make sure that all boys and girls go to school; to make sure that girls as well as boys have the same chances in life; and to stop children from dying and help them stay healthy.

Greenacre U10 Tournament - Tuesday 22nd and Tuesday 29th January

On Tuesday 22 January and Tuesday 29 January, the U10A netball team played in the Greenacre Tournament. They won all five matches: Oakhyrst Grange 5:1, Greenacre 1:0, Seaton House 3:1, St David’s 5:0 and Micklefield 3:2.

The final match against our toughest opponents, Micklefield, was very exciting. Bramley managed to keep their nerve and, by playing as a team with everyone pulling their weight, beat Micklefield 3:2!
